Narrative: Art Gallery that specialises in displaying and selling Contemporary Australian Art, in particular Indigenous Art. Owned by middle aged artist/art collector who lives there with her husband.
- Incorporating my research I have created an contemporary art gallery/space and residence which speaks to the Newtown area’s Aboriginal Heritage.
- This is merged with the theory of the March̩ (circulation along defined architectural paths) but using a winding circulation system that connects all the elements of the design, which relates to imagery of the Rainbow serpent in Aboriginal Dreamtime stories Рthe snake that created the world by forming the landscape. This creation will also link to the creativity of the artist works displayed.
- Another concept that is integrated into the design is layers of meaning and materials. I plan to incorporate a range of materials including: timber, concrete, steel, and stonework which will create contrast between each of the elements within the site and complement the complexity of the surrounding Newtown area.
Design elements from Korean “Heyri” architectural precedents included:
- Overhanging planes
- Enclosed void/light well
- Water feature to create reflections and animate the buildings
- Layering of levels and between buildings
