The Geographer by Johannes Vermeer.

This painting is thought to represent the growing influence and rise in prominence of scientific enquiry in Europe at the time of its painting, 1668–69. This is represented by the globe in the top left. The inclusion of a map in the background on the right, shows that the persona in the painting is well travelled. The way that the man looks away from his map and out of the window - displays a want to be elsewhere - perhaps immediately beyond the window or places even further away. There is a variety of objects places randomly around the room - books on top of the cupboard and on the floor, sheets on the floor and bed, ornate fabric etc.

These aspects of the painting allowed me to develop the narrative: "a building for an explorer to display his souveniers and contemplate the places associated with each." This will relate to Eileen Gray's design methods of starting from the object and designing the building around it and keeping the entire emphasis on the objects.

This would involve creating an electic design that incorporates architectural styles from all over the world and inspiration from the English architect and master of light - Sir John Soane. The busy, diverse atmosphere created in his house, now a museum - could be used to display the explorers range of collected items from various locations and time periods.
